Things learned by an IV volunteer and myself from travels while volunteering in foreign countries.
...I can relate, how about you?

...that I'm not half as patient and tolerant as I thought I was before I came on this trip.
...that a smile and a sense of humour can soften an official.
...how blessed and rich I am to have such wonderful people in my life.
...that you not only have to adapt to the cultures of the countries you visit, but also to the behaviours of fellow world travellors.
...that there exist in this world inherently wonderful as well as inherently nasty people.
...never to take my saftey for granted and never let my guard down, no matter where I am.
...that anything in life is a risk.
... that travelling can really put life into perspective.

...is there anything else more fullfilling than the gift of travel and getting insight into different cultures?
...that real poverty exists in the big cities; that people that live in the country off the land in a one room shack are richer than they think.
...potential thieves sense weakness and ignorance from a mile away.
...that if given a waiting time, the correct one is usually three times longer.
...why God gave me big hips. One word- to SAMBA!
...that I lose my will to live on night trains, buses and plane journies more than 9hours long.
...that I form the same relationship with my lonely planet guide as with a dental examination- you hate it but need it.
...to get used to throwing toilet paper into waste basket rather than the toilet in some places.
...that Australia is very far away from the rest of the world!
...that the world is an amazing place, one to be embraced.
