For information on international volunteering go to www.volunteering.org.au Mexico, cleaning lice from a childs' hair is not a particulary pleasant job, but when you look at how appreciative this child is, it puts life into perspective. Water is scarse in Oaxaca Mexico, so this a real treat for the child. |

![]() Mongolia; a volunteer cutting up some apple for a street child, this simple act of sharing brings joy to this child. This volunteer was partisipating in a summer camp held for little girls, either already involved in child prostitution or at high risk of becoming involved. The volunteer's role was to just be friends to the kid's and run programes that were aimed at raising the self esteem of the girls. |

![]() Mexico. This picture was taken early New Years morning in 2002. This woman Jodie Bauman has dedicated her life in helping to support the Tri Qui street children and their families in Oaxaca. Jodie was worried that tourists would have been too busy celebrating the night before to buy the childrens little trinkets and so the children would'nt have any money to buy anything to eat. She could'nt bare the thought that they would be hungry, so she filled her car with loaves of bread, cheese and meat, and we went out in search of street children that might be hungry. They recognised her car and came running out to her all over the city, she was right they were famished. |

![]() Sth Africa... This is a picture of children who live in the informal settlements, in the southern coastal town of Hermanus. They are lining up in the hope that they will gain entrance to the local school, which is holding a volunteer run summer school. At the school the children are guaranteed of having fun with arts and crafts, visiting zoo's ect ect. Every week of summer the kids names are put into a lottery and once a week about 12 kids are chosen to be taken on summer camp, the following week. This project was set up by a Dutch couple whom after visiting Sth Africa, could no longer sleep at night, thinking about the children that suffer so greatly and have nothing to look forward to. |

![]() Nepal: school room scene, with volunteers teaching english. The great thing about the volunteer's coming to a place such as this school in the Chitwan district is that, some of those shy children that have fallen behind, are given a fresh perspective and new hope with the different more relaxed way that volunteers like to teach. Which is basically to get the kid's partisipating in activities that make learning interesting and fun. In Nepal the teaching system is quite brutal in the fact that, a shy child whom does not partisipate is deemed unimportant. It is thought that a hit over the head may make the children more assertive and learn more. When in fact some of the really bright student's just get put to the back of class, because of their personality. The volunteer's imput help's these children greatly and the western way of teaching is undoubtedly better than the harsh way of the Nepalese teaching system.. In countries such as Nepal where tourism contributes so greatly to the countries wealth, speaking english is vital to changing the lives and opportunities afforded to these children. |
